timberland boots He's the man behind some of Australia's slickest events and campaigns but when it comes to his own style, public relations supremo Mark Cavanagh of Cav Con prefers a more relaxed approach. Here, he talks sneakers, suits and the art of dressing for the occasion.

timberland fashion boots Style is …

timberland fashion boots About dressing appropriately and with refinement, originality or a bit of an edge. It doesn't necessarily mean ''fashion''. It should catch the eye, for the right reasons, and be inspiring.

timberland shoes What's on the highest rotation in your wardrobe?

cheap timberland boots That would be socks and undies (Comme des Garcons SHIRT socks and Macpherson Men black trunks). My trainers get a workout too as I wear them pretty much every day (from Spring Court to Saint Laurent).

I can't live without my …

Friends and family, first and foremost. I also can't live without my glasses/contacts. Blind as a bat without them.

What was your most recent purchase?

I just got back from Paris and did some damage at Saint Laurent, which included a pretty killer leather jacket.

You're having a fashion dinner party - who do you invite?

If you're talking famous, so many iconic fashion names are more often than not social mishaps and/or ego maniacs. Neither good for repartee. On that note, it's hard to beat Gore Vidal. One of the greats. I'm also kind of obsessed with Patti Smith, Robert Mapplethorpe and that whole era of New York '70s and '80s.

When I shop for clothes …

I do it randomly and fast, increasingly online. Except when I'm overseas. Then it's more recreational and I can enjoy the process, spending time trying things on, weighing up my options and hence I like to shop solo, thanks very much. One or two solid shopping days on that level does me for ages.

Your biggest fashion indulgence?

Probably my Omega watch. But at the risk of sounding cliched, I see it more as an investment.

Anything in your wardrobe you've never worn?

A dumb-ass double breasted brown suit (Euro label I'll leave out so as not to incriminate) that I was foolishly talked into buying on an overseas trip several years ago. Note to self: never shop after a boozy lunch.

Describe the outfit you wore to your school formal.

Basic black tux from one of those shocker formal hire joints. No doubt highly flammable. The only redeeming feature was a (borrowed) properly tied bow-tie.

Biggest mistake men make when it comes to fashion?

That would be fashion. I tend to think men shouldn't really strive to be fashionable per se. Keep up with the trends, sure, but on the lowdown. Dress appropriately for the occasion - your gig, your age etc.

If you could live in any era of fashion what would it be and why?

I don't really have any romantic notions about fashion from by-gone eras. I quite like the fact that today super strict rules apply less. I respect tradition but also like the fact that black tie today doesn't necessarily have to mean ''penguin suit''.

Best fashion advice you received from mum or dad?

"Darling, I don't think a pop star is your best fashion reference." That may not necessarily be the case today but back then my mum saved me from a pair of purple velvet high-waisted and cuffed flares that I thought were the bomb.

Five items you'd take to a desert island?

Boardies (James Perse); sunglasses (Ray-Ban aviators and Sunday Somewhere), hoodie and shorts from Jac+Jack, Timberland boots (above).

My fashion icons are …

David Bowie, Hedi Slimane, Paul Weller (above).

If money were no object I would buy …

A top-of-the-line, made to-measure Tom Ford tux.

I would never wear…

Animal print. I even think hip-hop bling kings are pushing it with that one.

I love to wear …

Trackies and T-shirt (James Perse, Surface to Air, Jac+Jack … they all have the best cottons), preferably on my sofa with my dog, Bo, and a good book.
